Katja Misikangas, product manager, Arctic Warriors
“I was born in a family of folk healers in the village of Narkaus in Rovaniemi. My grandfather Albin Merkkiniemi was a famous folk healer who tended to the villagers’ ailments with herbs. My mother has also spent her whole life in the natural product industry, so I grew up learning everything possible about herbs. My own children consider nature’s herbs, like the nettle or garden angelica, as a daily part of our diet.
I was bothered by the fact that superfoods are brought to Finland from overseas while our own power plants are completely underutilised. Thanks to the arctic growing conditions and Lapland’s clean nature the plants grow exceptionally nutritious and aromatic.
Arctic Warriors was born to create tasty and easy-to-use herbal products so that everybody can enjoy the power of the Nordic super plants that can work miracles. Our products combine traditions with today’s examined data and wellness trends. They are superfoods for today’s people, and they give energy and keep away illness. We get the herbs we use – garden angelica, rose-root, spruce nuts and nettle – from Lapp farmers and wild herb gatherers. We believe strongly in the future of the natural products industry in Lapland.”
Jari Kurtti, CEO, Arctic Forest Foods
“I have always been interested in pure taste and the untouched nature. What could reflect these better than the blueberries and birch forests that grow clean and wild?
My passion for ingredients started at age 15 when I started studying in a culinary school in Rovaniemi. I’ve had the opportunity to get experience from varied kitchens for over 10 years, from snack stands to a Michelin star kitchen. This has guided me in creating recipes and finding my own style. It also drove me to become an entrepreneur.
I wanted to bring together the best possible ingredients from the Finnish forest, field and vegetable garden. Lapland’s nature is full of real super plants that grow strong and nutritious because of the long winters and short summers. The midnight sun, Lapland’s clean nature and pure water also make them especially tasty.
Arctic Superfoods’ EVÄS bars taste full and rich with the brightest stars of our clean nature: blueberry, lingonberry, cranberry and buckthorn. The base of the bars is made of Finnish ingredients: carrot, flax and clean, gluten-free oats. The flavour experience is completed by the wild herbs nettle, spruce nuts and birch leaves. The sweetness comes from delicious honey.
Our company is located at Levi where we are surrounded by the fells of Lapland and air that is proven to be the cleanest in the world. We get our raw ingredients, such as berries, root vegetables and wild herbs, from close by. One of our core values is to produce and pack all the products by hand in Finland.”
Anu Ruohosto, CEO, Anumati Naturals
“My love for creating beauty products from the Finnish nature comes from my childhood. I grew up in the countryside and have lived near nature my whole life. In my childhood home I lived surrounded by nature and plants. That has given me inspiration for several of my products. I have always loved the unique connection with nature and its effect on health. In the old days there were no other options, nor were they needed. Nature was utilised as a matter of fact, however, with respect. I was born surrounded by this information, as my mother’s side of the family had many Karelian plant healers, blood stoppers and Finnish shamans. The knowledge, pure ingredients and nature’s bounty have remained as valuable assets into my adulthood. I wish people today knew more about the physical and spiritual healing powers of the surrounding nature.
Nature is still all around us for anybody to utilise. In my work in Anumati Naturals I like best the continuous research, to gain a better understanding of plants’ qualities and their active ingredients. I make the products with my own hands. The selection of ingredients and their combinations are based on my own research and development. The knowledge about Finnish plants is largely folklore, information that is passed by word of mouth. I have the honour of being a member of a Finnish folk healer association Kansanparantaja. Anumati Naturals Sauna & Spa Sauna Tapio contains active ingredients from nature. The inspiration for raw ingredients lies in the Finnish folk tradition. Birch ash, tar, pine, juniper, blueberry, cranberry and cloudberry are all treasures of the Finnish herbalism.
The idea behind the Sauna Tapio product family was to bring the Finnish forest close to people. Finnish folk tradition is based on the curing and harmonising power of nature, which essentially involves stopping, quietude and listening – like the sauna. Sauna and wellbeing go hand in hand. For me sauna is part of nature Sauna is a sensual sanctuary that makes you beautiful, relaxed and rested. Sauna is a place where you can let go of worries, sorrows and haste. A warm sauna opens the pores of the skin and cleans the skin deep. With activated surface blood circulation and increased sweating impurities exit the body more efficiently. After the sauna the skin often feels soft. Afterwards you want to wrap yourself in a clean towel, bathrobe or nightgown, sit and cool down peacefully, and let the mind and body quiet down to rest. Watch the beautiful lake landscape and listen to birds. When the mind relaxes the body follows.”
